RC Lens manager Franck Haise has admitted that Seko Fofana remains committed to the club but there is a chance that the 27-year-old could leave amid reports Newcastle want to sign the Ligue 1 midfielder.

Speaking to RMC Sport, the 51-year-old coach revealed that he is confident that his club captain will remain with Lens ahead of their third season back in the French top-flight, however, there is always a possibility that Fofana could leave, with Newcastle reportedly interested in signing the Ivory Coast international.

As well as being linked to the likes of Arsenal, Leeds United and Tottenham, Fofana is one of the most in-demand players in Ligue 1 this summer, with the former Manchester City academy star asserting himself as a complete midfielder with Lens and a key player in their incredible rise up the French rankings in recent years.

With a reported price tag of €40m (£34m), Lens are eager to keep hold of Fofana this summer, especially after losing his midfield partner in Cheick Doucoure to Crystal Palace, yet interest from Newcastle late on in the window could tempt the club captain to leave the Premier League.

Indeed, Newcastle are eager to sign a central midfielder this summer, and Fofana could be perfect for Eddie Howe’s system and future plans for the club, and for Lens’ manager Haise, there is a possibility that the 27-year-old could leave in the window.

The Lens manager said: “What is clear, and what I’ve been repeating in the past weeks is that Seko is very motivated, very committed to the pre-season preparations, to the team and to the club. That much I am sure of because I see it on a daily basis. But the transfer window is the transfer window, it’s possible that he can leave.”

Fofana has been one of the most entertaining players in Ligue 1 since Lens’ return to the division in 2020, and with Newcastle hot on the midfielder’s trail, making a let move to sign the 27-year-old could be a great move from Howe ahead of the new season.

After all, Fofana has proven to be a quality player who is more than capable of playing in the Premier League, and Newcastle could fund a move to sign the Ivorian should they feel the need to sign that top quality midfielder who can give their squad that extra edge.
