Billions sunk, yet no clear end to Australia’s submarine plan

SYDNEY – In 2009, Australia unveiled an ambitious plan to develop a new fleet of 12 submarines “without delay” to replace its ageing fleet of six submarines.

The plan to acquire a new fleet was flagged as a crucial priority for the country, particularly as China’s naval power rapidly expands and as tensions rise around the South China Sea.
