Youngsters start shopping even earlier – with the average time for 16 to 24-year-olds to start searching sites at 8.56am.

Just over 40 per cent of those who shop on the big day will be drunk or tipsy when they make the purchase with shoppers planning to splurge £144.19 on average.

That might explain why half of respondents claim to have regretted a Christmas Day purchase they have made previously.

Most online shoppers are looking to make the most out of the deals, according to a survey of 1,000 people by Trustly.

Research also shows that six per cent of adults – an estimated 3 million people in the UK – will ask for a refund because they broke up with the person they bought a present for.

Almost 40 per cent of Brits will ask for a refund between Christmas and New Year, according to the survey.

William McMullan, Director of eCommerce at Trustly, said: “Santa doesn’t always get it right. As the turkey is cooking away on Christmas Day, shoppers are stuffing their online baskets with bargains and the gifts they really wanted.

“But for those wanting a refund on the dodgy socks from Auntie Sue or a refund on the gifts they bought for exes they broke up with after a Monopoly argument, unfortunately they might be waiting a while.

“Slow refunds from card schemes mean people will have to wait several days to get their money back.”
